Economics 187: The Economic History of Globalization

This course has as its focus the evolution of the global economy from very early times. Of particular interest will be historical developments dating from the nineteenth century up to the present day. This longer period from c. 1800 to c. 2000 is instructive in that it witnesses the integration of the world’s nations into the first truly global economy, its disintegration in the wake of the First World War and isolationist retrenchment up to the Second World War, and the contemporary reintegration of the global economy.

The first weeks will be spent on an overview of the five major periods of globalization: its pre-history (everything before 1500), its early history (1500-1800), it first wave (1800-1913), its decline (1919-1939) and it subsequent resurgence (1950-present). The remainder of the course will be spent examining common themes across all periods, such as the role of international monetary arrangements.

Course Description:

Biological ecologies and human societies are made up of large numbers of interdependent beings joined in dynamic networks that vary in size from small collectives (such as the food webs of ponds) to the human global economy. This course is an introduction to the new sciences of complexity which describe, explain, and provide practical applications for these systems.

Part One of the course focuses on six new big ideas in natural and social science: 1) Complexity Theory, 2) Non-Linear Systems & Chaos, 3) Far-from-Equilibrium Systems, 4) Fractal Phenomena & Self-Organized Criticality, 5) Social Networks, and 6) Agent-Based Simulation Modeling.

Part Two of the course focuses on the application of these ideas to paradigm examples in the origin of life, biological ecology, artificial societies (culture), the economy, and the management of complex social and organizational systems (including engineering projects).

Taught in a computer classroom with simulations that students run (no programming required) and which include models by advanced undergraduates created in our Human Complex Systems Program.

Also beginning on Wednesday, July 28, at 9:00 a.m., Economics 106V/Investments (lecture 1 only) will be opened up to seniors officially in a Department of Economics major and who have completed Economics 11 and 101 with a 3.0 minimum GPA in Economics 11 and 101, and a 3.2 minimum cumulative UCLA GPA, as well as having completed Economics 102. No exceptions to these criteria will be made.  If there is still space in the class beginning on Monday, August 2, at 9:00 a.m., juniors will have the opportunity to enroll.

Is the economic crisis also a crisis of economics? From different perspectives, today there is rather harsh criticism of economics as a social science.

Academics in the Commons offers free student-support services through workshops, peer advising, and peer learning sessions, to help students develop success strategies at UCLA.  Student-led workshops cover various topics in academic enhancement, personal development, and career exploration.  Peer mentoring is available for incoming student through the Peer Advising Network (PAN), and the Academic Advising Assistance Desk is available for all UCLA undergraduates, Monday through Thursday afternoons throughout the academic year. At Covel Peer Learning Labs, Peer Learning Facilitators offer assistance in introductory math and science classes for currently-enrolled undergraduates, as well as in General Education and lower-division courses for student-athletes. Session sign-ups take place at the beginning of each quarter and additional drop-in assistance is available in the evening on a first-come, first-served basis.

Course Description: Econ 106A (formerly Econ 188B) is an interactive problem solving course using economics to address a variety of problems in public policy.  This course provides an introduction to a new case-based learning approach including assistance from UCLA Anderson MBA students.  Students, grouped in fours, will be required to present analysis on several “cases” throughout the quarter utilizing Excel and PowerPoint.   All students will be required to present analysis of final case to judges from top financial firms in the UCLA Case Study Competition.  Letter grading.

Interns play a significant role at Bunim/Murray Productions, and as a result, Bunim/Murray Productions has designed a full-time and part-time internship program for college and graduate students who have an interest in television production.  Bunim/Murray Productions also has a limited number of positions available for business administration, accounting, finance and human resources interns.  Interns selected must find his/her own housing and arrange for his/her own transportation in Los Angeles (suggestions and recommendations will be provided to all candidates selected for the program.)

PROGRAM DETAILS

All Bunim/Murray Production Internships are unpaid and those selected must be able to receive academic credit at a college or university.  Interns are provided with a valuable experience through exposure to television pre-production, post-production and business processes.  The program lasts for approximately 14-15 weeks (with the exception of the Summer program which runs approximately 8 weeks) and interns must commit a minimum of two full days a week (8 hours each day for 16 hours minimum a week.)  During the first half of the program, interns will have the opportunity to rotate throughout various departments (unless an intern is in a business area, in which they will remain in one department.)  After the initial period, the intern will then choose where they would like to be assigned for the remainder of the internship.  Some of our departments include:  Casting, Story, Editing, Music, Pre-production, Post Production, New Show Development, Business Development, Accounting/Finance, Human Resources, Legal, New Media and Website Design.

Some projects interns have worked on in the past include: observing and working with editors, compiling scripts from the Director’s notes for the Story Department, visiting and assisting on set locations in Los Angeles, viewing and logging footage, reviewing music to be used in future episodes, handling the distribution of fan mail, reviewing and sorting casting applications and more…

Economics 145 Topics in Math/Economics

Professor Copic will be offering Economics 145 this Fall. This is an advanced topics course and enrollment is by Department consent.

COURSE PREREQUISITES: This is an advanced topics course intended for students who may have an interest in pursuing a research career. Any student wishing to enroll in the course must have sufficient mathematical background or must otherwise qualify for the course through exceptional prior academic and/or work record. (Prerequisites: Econ 101, Econ 103, Math 33A or Math 115A, or Department consent). COURSE DESCRIPTION: Decision Theory, Game Theory, Bounded Rationality with introduction to research. The main thread of the course is to discuss human behavior in an evolutionary context in order to analyze aspects of human behavior that are hard to fit in with the rationality paradigm. We first discuss what it means to be rational, principally in terms of axioms of consistent decision making; we identify rationality in different environments, such as choice, inter-temporal choice, and choice under uncertainty. We then briefly move to strategic situations, and other multi-person situations, and identify what is meant by rationality in such settings. We then point out some well-known deviations from consistent behavior, some of these may be introduced through in-class experiments (Allais paradox, Ellsberg paradox, dictator games and backward induction, etc.). Next, we provide a short review of some of the models that have been proposed to account for such behavior: the reference-point models (e.g., Herbert Simon’s satiscing ideas), models of inconsistent inter-temporal choice (β-δ), models for decision-making under uncertainty (case-based theory of Gilboa and Schmeidler). We then move to a concrete example where we try to identify several underlying characteristics of the environment which determine human behavior, where we attempt to develop a simple model fitting the situation.

SimInsights is developing a web based collaborative simulation platform for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education for students at middle and high school and undergraduate levels. UCLA students may repeat up to 16 units of GRADED coursework in which they receive a grade of C- or below. If you repeat a course that you took for a letter grade, you MUST choose the same grading option when you repeat it. The same is not true for Pass/No Pass courses (see below). A course may be repeated only once. Although only the second grade earned (for better or worse) will be computed into your GPA, both grades will remain on your transcript.

After you have used the allowed 16 units of repeat credit, or if you do not have enough units left to repeat a course, you may still repeat a course in which you received a C- or below. However, both grades will be averaged into your cumulative GPA; the first grade will not be removed from the GPA.

No form or petition is required to repeat a class; all you need to do is enroll through URSA .  The Registrar’s Office will automatically code the course as a repeat.

Restrictions:

* You may repeat the same course only once.
* You may receive units for a repeated course only once.
* You will not receive credit for a course repeated after you have completed a more advanced course with a passing grade (i.e., Math, Chemistry, or foreign languages).

Repeating Pass/No Pass Courses

If you first took a course Pass/No Pass and did not pass, you have the option of repeating the course for a grade or for Pass/No Pass again.  There is no limit to the number of pass/no pass courses you may repeat for those courses in which you receive a grade of “No Pass.”

Unauthorized Repeats

A notation of “Unauthorized Repeat” or “Illegal Repeat” will show on your transcript if:

1. You received a C or better or a Pass the first time you took the course, OR
2. You repeat the same class more than once.

No credit will be given for an unauthorized repeat!

When you arrive, please pick up a career card at the table next to the gate.  You can fill it out at one of the tables on the IM field.  After you complete it, you will be provided with a name card, which you will fill out so that you can hand it to the faculty member who will read your name and recognize you on stage during the individual recognition portion of the ceremony.  You must fill out a name card to be recognized on stage.  Please make sure that the pronunciation line is printed clearly so that the faculty member will be able to pronounce your name correctly.

Drake will be open to your guests beginning at 4:30.  The ceremony will begin at 5:30 and should be over by around 7:30.

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from UCLA.  We look forward to celebrating your special day with you at the Department of Economics Commencement on Saturday, June 12.  You should plan to arrive at 4:45, although you can come as early as 4:30.  The latest that you should arrive is at 5:00.

Please stop by our office in 2263 Bunche during finals week to fill out a yellow career card, which will be located near the sign-in sheet.  Once you complete the card, please hand it to one of the counselors, who will give you a name card that you will take with you.  You should fill out the name card and bring it with you to Commencement, when you will hand it to the faculty member to read your name as you go on stage during the individual recognition portion of the ceremony.

The student line-up for the processional into Drake Stadium will be on the Intramural Field. You should enter the Intramural Field gate closest to Drake (off of Bruin Walk). If you haven’t already filled out a yellow career card and picked up your name card during finals week, you will need to pick up a yellow career card on the table to the right of the gate.  You can bring it onto the IM field to fill it out at one of the name card tables.  Once you complete it, you will hand it to one of the volunteers at one of the tables and you will be given your name card at that time.  Everyone participating in Commencement should have a name card filled out as they proceed into Drake Stadium for the ceremony since your name will not be read if you do not have one.

We recommend that you WEAR FLAT SHOES!!!!! Walking on grass and going up the stairs to the stage with shoes that have elevated heels could lead to a twisted ankle or other injury.  Don’t forget to wear your cap and gown.

Note that the following items are prohibited at Commencement:

• Food and beverage items (including cans and bottles)

• Banners, signs or balloons

• Umbrellas

• Noisemakers, air horns, etc.

• Backpacks or bags (small purses ok)

• Weapons of any kind

UCLA CAMPUS ACADEMIC REGULATIONS: Incompletes

Incomplete Policy

The instructor may assign the “incomplete” grade when work is of passing

quality but is incomplete for good cause. Assigning an “incomplete” is

at the discretion of the instructor, who is not obligated to do so.

If an instructor issues a grade of “incomplete,” the remaining

coursework must be finished by the end of your next completed quarter

(Fall, Winter, Spring). If the course is not completed, the “Incomplete”

will automatically lapse to an “F”.

It is your responsibility to discuss with the instructor the conditions

and timeframe for completing the course by the next regular term. Do

not re-enroll in the course!

If you cannot remove the “incomplete” within the allowed time frame, you

must petition the College to request an extension of time.

For Graduate Study in Ireland

Outstanding UCLA seniors or recent graduates are invited to apply for a Mitchell Scholarship.  Mitchell Scholarships finance one year of graduate study in any discipline at an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland beginning in Fall 2011.

ELIGIBILITY:  An applicant must be nominated by UCLA and

• be a citizen of the United States
• be 18 but not yet 30 years of age on October 1, 2010
• by Fall 2011, hold a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the United States
• have a demonstrated record of academic excellence, leadership, and service

1)      ALL people attending the event MUST be registered.  This includes friends, families, spouses, partners, etc.  We need to have a total count of people in order to make sure there is enough food for the dinner reception after the ceremony.  If you plan to have friends or family at the graduation then please make sure all of them are registered at:

Here is a sneak peak on the issues we’ll be working on in the coming months:
• Don’t you hate getting $20 back for a $90 textbook? We will significantly increase that value in the form of ASUCLA store credit.
• Plan a centralized financial aid fair where various campus resources come together all at the same time and the same place to answer any questions you have about your financial concerns.
• Decrease the costs graduating seniors have to pay to use Bruinview after they leave UCLA.
• Can’t pay for Graduate School standardized test classes? How about free tutoring classes where fellow Bruins that have done well in these tests get paid to teach you?

UCLA students may repeat up to 16 units of GRADED coursework in which they receive a grade of C- or below. If you repeat a course that you took for a letter grade, you MUST choose the same grading option when you repeat it. The same is not true for Pass/No Pass courses (see below). A course may be repeated only once. Although only the second grade earned (for better or worse) will be computed into your GPA, both grades will remain on your transcript.

After you have used the allowed 16 units of repeat credit, or if you do not have enough units left to repeat a course, you may still repeat a course in which you received a C- or below. However, both grades will be averaged into your cumulative GPA; the first grade will not be removed from the GPA.

No form or petition is required to repeat a class, all you need to do is enroll through URSA .  The Registrar’s Office will automatically code the course as a repeat.
Restrictions

* You may repeat the same course only once.
* You may receive units for a repeated course only once.
* You will not receive credit for a course repeated after you have completed a more advanced course with a passing grade (i.e., Math, Chemistry, or foreign languages).

Repeating Pass/No Pass Courses

If you first took a course Pass/No Pass and did not pass, then you have the option of repeating the course for a grade or for Pass/No Pass again.  There is no limit to the number of pass/no pass courses you may repeat for those courses in which you receive a grade of “No Pass.”
Unauthorized Repeats

A notation of “Unauthorized Repeat” or “Illegal Repeat” will show on your transcript if:

1. You received a C or better or a Pass the first time you took the course, OR
2. You repeat the same class more than once.

No credit will be given for an unauthorized repeat!
