Hello UCLA Undergrads,
Global Medical Brigades at UCLA is a national community service organization dedicated to providing much needed medical attention to those who would otherwise not have access to it. We are looking for volunteers to participate in our medical brigade to Honduras, where we will be delivering essential medical aid to people who need it the most. Honduras is one of the most destitute countries on our continent, with around 70% of the country below the poverty line. Disease and malnutrition are the leading cause of death among children below 5 years old.
Our medical brigade will be a mobile medical unit consisting of student volunteers and medical professionals working together to diagnose and treat patients at no cost. From in-take, to triage, to medical consultations, to filling the prescriptions, the groups experience the many realms of the medical profession under the guidance of licensed medical professionals. Last winter alone our brigade treated over 2,000 patients, as well as provided over 800 kg in medicine, supplies, and medical equipment.
While Global Medical Brigades provides excellent experience for students interested in healthcare, our group of volunteers normally consists of students from many different concentrations. There will be an information session on Feb. 23rd at 6 pm in Franz 2258A to provide more details about our next medical brigade, which is currently scheduled for the week of June 13-19. You can also find us at SWC’s Global Health Committee Volunteer Abroad Fair on Feb. 25th from 10 am – 2 pm in Ackerman Grand Ballroom. If you have any questions, please contact Jovan (jovanplamenac@globalbrigades.org), Christine (cthang@ucla.edu) or Phong (phonghuynh@mac.com).
We look forward to meeting you!
Sincerely,
Global Medical Brigades at UCLA
